This restaurant classic can be made at home with very little effort. The onion broth can be made ahead of time, or hold leftover portions for several days to prepare another serving in minutes.

  1. PLACE butter and olive oil in large pot over medium heat. When butter is melted, stir in onions, sugar, thyme, salt, pepper and bay leaves; cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add wine; reduce heat to low. Continue cooking 10 minutes or until onions are very tender. Stir in broth; heat thoroughly.
  2. PLACE bread on baking sheet; broil 1-1/2 minutes or until light golden brown. Flip slices; continue to boil 1-1/2 minutes or until light golden brown.
  3. FILL 4 oven proof soup bowls with broth mixture. Top with bread, and cheeses. Broil 2 to 3 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden brown.
